One day we were out on the playground and we started talking about different people and students that we know who have Autism. It got us thinking and we wondered if we could do something to get others thinking about it too.
Like a club to have others join in, maybe a fund raiser. We went to speak with Mr. K about our idea and he approved. He said that he would have Mrs. M, the school inclusion specialist, meet with us. Mrs. M also asked Mrs. C, a parent of a child at school, whose son has Autism to come help too. Our first meeting was in the learning center.
Mrs. M and Mrs. C said we had a lot of good ideas. Some of them were to share in the national autism awareness day on April 1st. To do this we will ask that all of our school community wear blue on that day. We are also busy cutting hundreds of puzzle pieces (the symbol of Autism), that we will ask our school community to sign and then all will be displayed in the cafeteria. This is just one way that we can represent how “We are all different; but we fit together”. We are also hosting a coloring contest. We will select the three best entries to receive a T-shirt with their coloring design printed on it. And we are looking to gather a “Team NES” to walk in the Autism Speaks Fund Raising Walk that takes place this Fall in our area. More information on this will be available soon.
Thank you for reading about our ideas that support our idea that “We are all different; but we fit together.” We hope that you can participate in one way or more of the fun ways we have come up with to bring awareness to those that have Autism.
For those interested in participating or helping and would like more information be sure to ask us how you can help too.
Sincerely, Girls of the 5th Grade class
